That’s the concept behind this revival of a name from Ferrari’s storied past – a fast GT that supplies style, panache, plenty of performance, and thanks to its folding hardtop and “two-plus” interior layout, an unusually high level of all-around usefulness.
The California takes Ferrari into new territory, into a region of the market that is defined by the cars already in residence. This is a Ferrari for women. That’s a sweeping, possibly sexist statement, however, so with a sensitivity unusual in Italy, Ferrari simply says it hopes the California will attract new buyers to the marque, and that some of them will be women.
The buggy seats behind the front chairs are useless for any human larger than Verne Troyer. And? They are perfectly suitable for those owners who wish to fold them to accommodate your tailored Ferrari luggage or McLaren golf bags.
Simply sculpted and leather trimmed with aluminium highlights, it has an attractive, faintly classic feel. In part this is fostered by the facia’s quartet of circular air vents and also by the lack of clutter thanks to the multi-function touch-screen display and the hiving off of all the heater controls to an underslung pod.
When you decide to remind yourself why you bought a Ferrari and find a deserted twisting road, you will be transported to motoring Nirvana. Uncharacteristically for a GT, the California twitches and dances over bumps, the steering wheel squirming in your hands. But this is first and foremost a Ferrari.
